ME1 complete, Citadel saved Council dead

Journal Entry: Sat Dec 29, 2012, 1:03 PM
Just got through Mass Effect 1. Great game overall.

I wish I was able to play this before I played 2. It probably would have been a much better experience.

The story was great.
I liked being able to equip party members with different gear (but the customization of 2 for Shepard was better).
2 had much better combat, and better party members and more interactions with them.

The side missions were boring and a bit tedious, but the main missions and story were great. All the side missions were the same and involved trying to get that car up mountains, then going into the same exact bases/mines. They did such a great job making all the planet surfaces look different and cool, it was very disappointing to go into the same bass over and over again. Still, I think the Mako was more fun then the Hammer head. at least the Mako did not explode every time a Geth breathed on it. (and Geth don't even breathe!)

Now to import and go through 2 again!

Liara + Garrus was my default party on my first play-through on 'easy' with realistic answers (some paragon, some rogue). Liara has the best commentary for ilos by the way. everybody else is kinda squicked out by the place, but she babbles on like a schoolgirl.

Ashley + Garrus was my second play-through on 'hard' as ultra-goody-two-shoes paragon. it was just a steamroller of an experience. nearly as easy as 'easy' due to the sheer firepower and the multiple invincibility (I played soldier shepherd). This is the one I ported to ME2 the first time I played through it.

Third playthrough was Tali + Wrex on 'imposible' (or whatever it's called, I forget) as ultra-psycho-always-rogue loose cannon shephard. Much harder since Tali died almost every mission until I got her some hardcore armor. Wrex was damn near unkillable though even without the invincibility abilities and even on the hardest difficulty. This is the one I ported to mass effect 2 the second time I played through it.

After the first time I played through the game and learned to hate the side-quests, I don't do any of the side-quests except earth's moon. Game is over a lot quicker, but it's a much more satisfying story experience.

I also hit the packrat limit on my first playthrough, but by the second and third, I'd learned that you only really need about a dozen or so total weapons since most characters only use one, and almost all of the weapon and armor add-ons are either complete crap, or outclassed by the good ones. Everybody gets a medical interface armor upgrade, everybody gets either anti-geth or anti-human weapon upgrade (Depending on mission), everything else gets melted down, including all shotguns, most pistols, and most sniper rifles (I keep one good one for play-time on shepherd). Assault rifles were just overpowered in that game when tricked out properly.

Still my favorite of the 3 games, but I haven't finished #3 yet. I should go play it...

I've made almost every decision possible in one of the 3 playthroughs, killed ashley, killed kaiden, killed rachne queen, released her, Romanced Ashley, Liara, and so on. etc. etc. etc. Never been able to kill Wrex though. I just can't ever bring myself to do so. He's one of my favorite party members of any of the 3 games based on the combination of badass personality and handy-to-have-along. He's just too awesome to ever kill. Grunt does not fill Wrex's shoes at all. Hell, Grunt isn't fit to wear Wrex's bathroom slippers.

I was a solider. My permanent party was Ashley and Tali. Tali was pretty worthless in combat. She dies constantly, and walked around sick half the time (green energy bar). The only time she got any good was when she hacked the turrets in the final battle on the Citadel.
When I play through ME1 again, I'll use Wrex and Garrus.
If the side quests have no story implications, I'll skip them entirely in my second go.

Yeah, Grunt is probably my least favourite crew member in ME2. I had one game where I did not even wake him up.

Garrus and Wrex would be a fun combo. I used them together for awhile in my first playthrough till I settled on liara + garrus. It especially might be fun to try out a non-soldier build for shephard since garrus and wrex would bring significant firepower to a given fight already. That said, I lean towards raw soldier archetypes in these types of games anyway, with my supporting characters being the mage/thief types.

I did find use for grunt during the final mission of ME2 on my second playthrough, but that's only because I didn't trust him with any important roles. He was fine as party member #3, drawing enough fire from me to allow me to cowboy my way through the level. I think I want to say I took him and Samara (well, Morinth-as-samara. That was my psycho badass rogue shephard after all) to the final mission that time. The previous playthrough was, I believe, garrus and jack for the final mission, who were my go-to base team for most of the game anyway. Loyalty missions discounted, obviously).

For the record, Garrus always has a potential place on my team in any of the 3 games. He's probably my favorite companion. I was really high on Jack the first time I played, probably cause the game built her up as such a badass storywise, but I soured a lot on Jack my second playthrough, since her actual in-combat results weren't so fantastic. Samara just seems to get more killing done.

I was disappointed at how little difference saving the council vs not saving the council made on the plotline of game 2.

Just restating 2 tonight, and the beginning of 2 is so much more effective after playing through 1. The interactive comic was an okay primer, but actually doing it and seeing the whole thing play out makes me feel more attached to the story; even if the decisions don't make that much difference in a carry over. Can't wait to get to part 3. I have played 2 a lot, so this time is just so I can get a singular game through the whole triology.

I only got about 4 hours into ME3, but it looks like they are actually taking some of the decisions you made in ME1 that didn't matter in ME2, into account for ME3. I like that. I'll probably have to restart ME3 in the next couple of days since I hate jumping back into a plot after 6 months or whatever.

I agree that the first 10 minutes of ME2 are much more effective if you've played ME1, and are familiar with the layout of the ship and the people on it. They recreated it all just to blow it up in the first 10 minutes, so they can tug on the nostalgia strings of fans of the first game. I think that's pretty cool.

It would be a cruel joke if the ending of ME3 gets impacted by the mineral collecting side quest of ME1 :D

I finished my first play through of ME a few days ago. Saved the Council, then told Udina to go jump out an air lock. Hate that guy so much...

And yet for all the Mako's amazing wall climbing ability, it is still stymied by a pile of rocks it's own height on that planet Liara's stuck on. And as many times as i tried to do the flip on it's side and wiggle through trick I never managed. -shrugs- at that point I was kitted out for Geth and didn't have much trouble with them.

My problem was I am a pack rat and I kept hitting the 150 item limit. That limit is annoying.

I tried that too, and since I went going for Liara last (i don't like her), it was like "wtf? I climbed higher mountains than this before!"

I romanced Ash, saved her, released the Rachni Queen, destroyed the genophage cure (but kept Wrex), let the council die, and put Anderson in charge.

I tend to be a pack rat too, but I quickly realized I was collecting a lot of money, and the game is easy enough that equipment does not really matter; so, I started converting everything to omni-gel.

Went into the lava about two dozen times trying to go over that thing. -rolls eyes-

Romanced Kaiden, saved Ash, freed the Queen, destroyed the phage (kept Wrex), Saved the Council and Anderson got the seat, and was nearly 100% Paragon. 7 Renegade points for accidentally running over a few space chimps.

The play through so far with the imported char's been interesting spotting the changes.

I wish I'd gotten Liara sooner then I had, as I like a strong Biotic/Combat team vs straight Combat or Combat/Tech. Unleashed her and Wrex and all I needed to do was sit back, pick off the stragglers, and occasionally throw out a Unity or some Medi jell.

I was paragon too, but I played as a pro-human, so occasionally I picked up renegade points. I ran over a chimp by accident too.

Don't find much use for biotics. Guns get the job done just fine.
I like Krios in 2, but he uses guns more then his biotics. I do like the power where you make the bubble and then when enemies walk into it, the get stuck floating.
